TAM

TAM stands for Trans Atlantic Model and GREC was instrumental in providing assistance to this successful event. A group of model aircraft enthusiasts from USA decided to attempt fly a model aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time, from Newfoundland to Connemara, thus emulating Alcock and Brown's flight. GREC assisted by setting up a radio telemetry receiving station which would monitor signals from the model aircraft as it approached Ireland. This was on 433Mhz so was well within our capability of 70cms operation.
The operation commenced in 2002 but the aircraft all ditched in the Atlantic. A further attempt in August 2003 was successful and the aircraft designated TAM-5 (fifth attempt) was launched on Aug 9th in Newfoundland landed in Ballinconeely on 11th August 2003. We picked up the telemetry on 433 two hours out and as the signal strength increased were able to predict landfall. The TAM landed at 1308gmt at Dooloughan Bay beach, Truska, Ballyconneely.
